Anglers age 16 and older need a Georgia fishing license to fish in fresh or salt water. Kids 15 and under don’t need one. Residents 65 and older can get a discounted senior license, and those born before July 1, 1952 can get a free lifetime license.

What Age Do You Need a Fishing License in Georgia?
A Georgia fishing license is required once you turn 16. State law requires anglers 16 and older to carry a current license while fishing in fresh or salt water. The rule covers lakes, rivers, ponds on public land and the coast.
The day you turn 16, you need a license.
Do Kids Need a Fishing License in Georgia?
No. Kids 15 and under can fish in Georgia without a license.
Residents that age still have an option. The Optional Youth Fishing License costs $10 and lasts until the child’s 17th birthday. It also includes mountain trout privileges, which a regular fishing license does not.
Why would anyone buy one? Because it covers the child through the turn-16 transition and counts toward conservation funding. It isn’t required, though.
Nonresident kids 15 and under also fish without a fishing or trout license. They don’t need the saltwater permit either.
Is a Georgia Fishing License Free for Seniors?

It depends on your birth date. Georgia has three senior options, and the cutoffs trip people up.
- Senior Fishing License, $4 annual for residents 65 and older.
- Senior Sportsman’s License, $7 annual or $70 lifetime for seniors born on or after July 1, 1952. It covers hunting and fishing.
- Free lifetime license for seniors born before July 1, 1952.
Age 65 gets you a discount, not a free pass. The free lifetime license depends on your birth date, not your age today.
Myths vs. Official Rules
Some websites contradict each other on this topic.
- Myth: “Seniors are exempt.” Not quite. Seniors need a license, but it is discounted, or free for those born before July 1, 1952.
- Myth: “No one over 16 is exempt.” Also not quite. Resident landowners fishing on their own land, and their immediate household family, are exempt from Georgia’s license requirements, according to WRD. Free Fishing Days are another exception (see below).
When sources disagree, trust the WRD. It sets the rules.
Other Permits That Also Start at Age 16
Two add-ons use the same age cutoff.
Trout License. You need one at 16 or older to fish for or possess mountain trout. A basic fishing license is required first.
Saltwater Information Program (SIP) permit. It’s free and required at 16 or older for saltwater fishing, even if you hold a full-privilege license. It lasts one year, so you renew it annually.
Nonresident Age Rules
The age line is the same. Nonresidents 16 and older need a Georgia fishing license.
- Annual: $50
- One-day: $10
- Additional days: $3.50 each
Active-duty military stationed in Georgia (and their dependents) and nonresident full-time Georgia college students can buy resident licenses. They need a military ID or a current Georgia student ID.
Free Fishing Days and Other Exemptions
Georgia residents don’t need a fishing or trout license on Free Fishing Days. The next ones are:
- June 5, 2027
- June 12, 2027
- September 25, 2027 (National Hunting and Fishing Day)
Other exemption: resident landowners fishing on their own land, and household family on that land, don’t need a license.
The 16-17-65 Rule (An Easy Way to Remember)

Here is a memory shortcut built from the WRD rules.
- 16: your license requirement starts.
- 17: the optional youth license expires.
- 65: Senior discounts begin.
And one more number to check if you’re a senior: July 1, 1952. If you were born before it, ask about the free lifetime license.
How to Buy a Georgia Fishing License
Licenses are sold online, in person at participating locations, and by phone at 800-366-2661. Online purchases go through GoOutdoorsGeorgia. The Outdoors GA app is also available.
Residents need proof of residency, meaning a Georgia driver’s license or ID with a Georgia address and three consecutive months of residence.
